Chronic and Traumatic Skin Conditions
Chronic or traumatic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, shingles, diabetic ulcers, bed sores and dermatitis affect millions of Americans each year and can cause a range of issues from mild discomfort to severe pain and embarrassment. A chronic skin condition not only affects your overall health, is also affects your quality of life.
In order to understand why some skin conditions are considered chronic or traumatic, it is helpful to understand what the word actually implies. Chronic conditions in general cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear. More than 85% of Americans over 65 years of age have at least one chronic health condition. In this population there are over 3,000 different skin disorders. Lifestyle, diet, high levels of stress, and the significant increase in environmental toxins are major contributors to the leading chronic conditions.
Chronic/Traumatic Conditions Defined
The U.S. National Center for Health Statistics defines a chronic condition having one or more of three symptoms:
- The problem lasts at least 3 months in an uninterrupted fashion.
- The problem doesn’t last 3 months but comes back over and over again for an extended period of time.
- The problem is a relatively low intensity problem that persists long term. This doesn’t mean that it isn’t a serious issue. It simply means that it isn’t an immediate life threatening condition.
