Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, skin resurfacing procedure that gently exfoliates or polishes away the top layer of dead skin cells manually to reveal skin that looks and feels smoother and brighter. Fine lines, blemishes, dull skin and sun spots can be improved, especially with regular treatments. Home care products are more easily absorbed and therefore more effective after a microdermabrasion treatment. Because it is manual exfoliation, the treatment is easily controlled by the skin care expert and far less risky than chemical peels or other exfoliation methods.
When to consider microdermabrasion
- If you want to brighten your skin and reveal a healthy glow
- If you have sun damage, acne scars, or fine lines
- If your skin texture feels rough to the touch
- If you have reactive skin that is contraindicated for chemical peels
It may require a series of microdermabrasion treatments and then ongoing maintenance treatments needed to reach a desired goal. There is an immediate result of smoother skin after a treatment and while there are no serious side effects, the skin may feel sensitive and appear slightly red following a treatment. Any sensitivity or redness is typically gone within 48 hours. Chemical free sunscreen should be worn after a treatment and is especially important on the days to follow. Makeup may be applied right away and all normal activities may be resumed.
Professional microdermabrasion is much more powerful and effective than any of the home units that may be purchased by the consumer. It is best to seek out a skin care professional for the best results and home care advice.
Two types of microdermabrasion
There are two types of microdermabrasion. The first is Crystal Microdermabrasion. This type of microdermabrasion performed by professionals includes a hand piece that emits crystals onto the surface of the skin, resulting in a gentle abrasion or “polishing” process. Then the dead skin cells along with the crystals are suctioned off either instantaneously (in the same hand piece) or in a secondary process.
This second type is a Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion that utilizes a diamond-tip hand piece that gently abrades and exfoliates dead skin cells. Like the crystal microdermabrasion, the dead skin is either suctioned off right away in the same hand piece or in a secondary process. The diamond-tip microdermabrasion is safer to perform closer to the eyes and has more flexibility in sensitive areas or on more sensitive skin.
